Divinity: Original Sin 2 is an RPG video game developed and published by Larian Studios. It is the sequel for Divinity: Original Sin 1. In the game, players can play solo or with three friends. The game is very similar to Dungeons & Dragons and is known for its in-depth RPG mechanics. Here’s how to play it on Linux.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 works on Linux pretty well, as it has a gold rating on ProtonDB. However, it will only work with the help of Steam and Proton. To get it working, you’ll need to install Steam.
Open up a terminal window on the Linux desktop to start the Steam installation on your Linux PC. You can open up a Linux terminal on the desktop by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Or, search for “Terminal” in the app menu.
With the terminal window open and ready to use, follow the installation instructions below that corresponds with the Linux OS you currently use.
Ubuntu
Steam is installable on Ubuntu through the official software repositories. To get it working, use the following Apt install command down below.
sudo apt install steam
Debian
To get Steam working on Debian, you’ll need to download the DEB package to your computer. Using the wget command down below, grab the DEB package from the Steam website.
wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb
After downloading the DEB package to your home folder on your Debian Linux PC, the installation of Steam can begin. Using the dpkg installation command down below, install the package to your computer.
sudo dpkg -i steam.deb
With Steam installed on your Debian Linux PC, open up a terminal and use the apt-get install -f command down below to correct any dependency issues that may have occurred during the installation.
sudo apt-get install -f
Arch Linux
Steam is available for Arch Linux users in the “multilib” software repository. However, not every installation of Arch Linux has the “multilib” repo enabled. To enable this repository, open up the /etc/pacman.conf
file in your favorite text editor (as root).
With the configuration file open, locate the “multilib” line. Then, remove the # symbol from the line. Also, remove the # symbol from the lines directly below it. Then, save the edits and close the editor.
Re-sync Pacman with the Arch Linux software repositories using the command below.
sudo pacman -Syy
Finally, install Steam.
sudo pacman -S steam
Fedora/OpenSUSE
Both Fedora and OpenSUSE will be able to install the Steam application through software repositories included on the system. That being said, Steam works better with Flatpak, so we suggest following the installation instructions for Flatpak instead.
Flatpak
To get the Steam app up and running on Flatpak, you’ll need first to install the Flatpak runtime on your computer. To do that, install the “flatpak” package. If you need guidance in setting up the runtime, follow our guide on the subject.
After setting up the Flatpak runtime on your computer, the Steam app can be installed. Then, using the two commands down below, get Steam up and running.
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam
