Risk of Rain 2 is a rouge-like action game. In it, the player fights through hordes of monsters — either co-op with friends or alone. The game was developed by Hopoo Games and published by Gearbox. Here’s how to play it on Linux.
The first Risk of Rain game was native to the Linux platform. Sadly, the sequel, Risk of Rain 2, isn’t. That being said, the game still works well on Linux, thanks to the Proton compatibility tool included in Steam.
Install Steam
To use Proton, you will need to get the Steam app installed on your computer. Steam works on a wide variety of Linux operating systems. To install the app on your computer, open up a terminal window on the Linux desktop.
With the terminal window open, the installation can begin. Using the instructions down below, set up the latest release of Steam on your Linux computer.
Ubuntu
To get Steam working on your Ubuntu system, use the following apt install command below.
sudo apt install steam
Debian
If you need to get Steam working on your Debian system, you will have to download the official Steam DEB package to your computer. Using the wget download command, grab the latest release of Steam.
wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb
After grabbing the latest DEB package, the installation can begin. Using the dpkg command down below, set up the newest release on your computer.
sudo dpkg -i steam.deb
With the Steam app set up on your computer, you will need to correct any dependency issues that may have arisen during the installation process using the apt-get install -f command.
sudo apt-get install -f
Arch Linux
To get Steam working on Arch Linux, you will need to enable the “multilib” software repository on your computer. To enable this software repository, open up the /etc/pacman.conf file (as root). Then, find the # symbol and remove it from the “multilib” line, as well as the lines directly below.
After editing the file, save it. Then, re-sync your Arch Linux system to the official repositories by using the following pacman command down below.
sudo pacman -Syy
Finally, install the latest release of Steam on your computer using the pacman command.
sudo pacman -S steam
Fedora/OpenSUSE
Those using Fedora or OpenSUSE will be able to install the Steam application by making use of software repositories included with the operating system. That said, the Flatpak instructions work much better, so we suggest following those instructions instead.
Flatpak
To use the FLatpak release of Steam on your Linux system, you must first set up the Flatpak runtime. You can configure the Flatpak runtime by following our guide on the subject.
With the runtime configured, the installation of Steam can begin. Using the commands below, set up Steam.
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam
Install Risk of Rain 2 Linux
Once you’ve set up Steam on your computer, open it up and log into your account. Then, follow the step-by-step instructions below to get Risk of Rain 2 working on Linux.
Step 1: Find the “Steam” button inside of Steam and select the “Settings” button inside of the menu. When you click on the “Settings” button, you’ll access the Steam settings area.
Look inside of the Steam settings area and click on the “Steam Play” button. Then, check the box Enable Steam Play for supported titles” and “Enable Steam Play for all other titles” box. Click on the “OK” button to save your settings.
Step 2: Find the “Store” button inside of Steam and click on it with the mouse. Then, select the “Search” box and type in “Risk of Rain 2”. Press the Enter key to view the search results.
Step 3: Look through the search results for “Risk of Rain 2” and click on it. Selecting the game in the results will take you to the game’s Steam store page. On the Risk of Rain 2 store page, find the green “Add to cart” button and click on it to purchase the game for your account.
Step 4: Once you’ve purchased Risk of Rain 2 on your computer, find the “Library” button and click on it to access your Steam library. Then, search through your Steam library for “Risk of Rain 2.” Click on the game in the Library to access Risk of Rain 2’s Steam game page.
Step 5: On the Risk of Rain 2 library page, find the blue “INSTALL” button and click on it with the mouse. When you select this button, it’ll download the game and install it on your computer.
When the installation is complete, the blue “INSTALL” button will turn into a green “PLAY” button. Select this play button to start up Risk of Rain 2 on your computer. Enjoy Risk of Rain 2, and happy gaming!
