With it comes exciting new updates to the Ubuntu desktop, the Ubuntu Linux kernel, as well as many new features that users are sure to love. In this guide, we\u2019ll go over how you can upgrade your system to 21.04.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-400889 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/files2.tojikon.net\/files-cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/how-to-upgrade-to-ubuntu-21-04.png\" alt=\"upgrade to Ubuntu 21.04\" width=\"1200\" height=\"658\"\/><\/p>\n<h2>Upgrade to 21.04 \u2013 GUI<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re planning on upgrading from Ubuntu 20.10 to 21.04 Hirsuite Hippo, the best way to go about it is through the GUI. The GUI is very hands-off and doesn\u2019t require too much compared to the terminal.<\/p>\n<p>To start the upgrade, press the\u00a0<strong>Win\u00a0<\/strong>key on the keyboard. This action will bring up the Ubuntu Gnome search window. Using the search box, type in \u201cSoftware Updater,\u201d and click on the icon with the name \u201cSoftware Updater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By selecting this icon, the Ubuntu Software Updater will open and search Ubuntu.com for the latest updates. This search will take some time. After a bit, you\u2019ll be prompted to update your Ubuntu PC if you haven\u2019t already.<\/p>\n<p>Following the update, reboot your PC. Then, log back in and re-launch the Ubuntu Software Updater. Once it is open, you\u2019ll see, \u201cThe software on this computer is up to date. However, Ubuntu 21.04 is now available (You Have 20.10).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-400902 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.addictivetips.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/ubuntu-upgrade-fs8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"660\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Click on the \u201cUpgrade\u201d button to start the upgrade. If you do not see this notification, you need to force it. To force it, open up a terminal window and enter the command below.<\/p>\n<p>Note: you can open up a terminal window on Ubuntu by pressing\u00a0<strong>Ctrl + Alt + T<\/strong>\u00a0or by searching for \u201cTerminal\u201d in the app menu.<\/p>\n<pre>\nupdate-manager -d\n<\/pre>\n<p>After clicking on the \u201cUpgrade\u201d button, you\u2019ll be asked to enter your password. Do so, and select the \u201cAuthenticate\u201d button to continue. Once you enter your password, you\u2019ll see the \u201cRelease Notes\u201d page for 21.04. Read through these notes. When done, click on the \u201cUpgrade\u201d button.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-400901 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.addictivetips.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/04\/ubuntu-release-fs8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"654\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Upon clicking on the \u201cUpgrade\u201d button on the release notes page, Ubuntu will begin configuring your Ubuntu system for Ubuntu 21.04 (downloading new packages, setting up new software channels, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>Once Ubuntu is done configuring your system for the upgrade, you will see a window. This window says, \u201cDo you want to start the upgrade?\u201d Click on the \u201cStart Upgrade\u201d button to continue.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-400899 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/files2.tojikon.net\/files-cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/how-to-upgrade-to-ubuntu-21-04-4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"662\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Upon clicking the upgrade button, Ubuntu will begin transitioning your existing system to Ubuntu 21.04. This process will take quite a long time, depending on your network connection. Sit back, and allow the \u201cDistribution Upgrade\u201d window to complete.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-400900 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/files2.tojikon.net\/files-cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/how-to-upgrade-to-ubuntu-21-04-6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"658\"\/><\/p>\n<p>When the \u201cDistribution Upgrade\u201d window finishes, it will restart your Ubuntu PC. Upon logging back into your Ubuntu system, you will be using Ubuntu 21.04! Enjoy!<\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-400889 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/files2.tojikon.net\/files-cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/how-to-upgrade-to-ubuntu-21-04.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"658\"\/><\/h2>\n<h2>Upgrade to 21.04 \u2013 Terminal<\/h2>\n<p>If you prefer to upgrade to Ubuntu 21.04 from 20.10 from the terminal, you can. To start, open up a terminal window on the Ubuntu Linux desktop. To open up a terminal window on Ubuntu, press\u00a0<strong>Ctrl + Alt + T\u00a0<\/strong>on the desktop. Or, search for \u201cTerminal\u201d in the app menu and launch it that way.<\/p>\n<p>Once the terminal window is open, you\u2019ll need to update your existing Ubuntu system. 20.10 must be up to date before attempting to upgrade to a new release, as breakages could occur.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To upgrade Ubuntu 20.10 to the latest packages, execute the following\u00a0<strong>apt update\u00a0<\/strong>command. Then, use the\u00a0<strong>apt upgrade\u00a0<\/strong>command to finish everything up. Keep in mind that this upgrade could take a few minutes.<\/p>\n<pre>\nsudo apt update\nsudo apt upgrade <\/pre>\n<p>After Ubuntu 20.10 is up to date, you\u2019ll need to do a\u00a0<strong>dist-upgrade<\/strong>. This command will install any packages to Ubuntu 20.10 that may have been held back for one reason or another.\u00a0<\/p>\n<pre>\nsudo apt dist-upgrade\n<\/pre>\n<p>Allow the\u00a0<strong>dist-upgrade\u00a0<\/strong>command to run its course. If there\u2019s nothing to install, no big deal. Running this command on Ubuntu 20.10 is just a precaution but a necessary one.<\/p>\n<p>From here, you\u2019ll need to change your software sources from Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy to Ubuntu 21.04 Hirsute. To do this, execute the following <strong>sed\u00a0<\/strong>command below.<\/p>\n<pre>\nsudo sed -i 's\/groovy\/hirsute\/g' \/etc\/apt\/sources.list\n<\/pre>\n<p>Once software sources have been changed over, execute the\u00a0<strong>apt update\u00a0<\/strong>command once again. Running this will allow Ubuntu to refresh software sources and change over repos from 20.10 to 21.04.<\/p>\n<pre>\nsudo apt update\n<\/pre>\n<p>Following the\u00a0<strong>update\u00a0<\/strong>command, re-run the <strong>apt upgrade\u00a0<\/strong>command. This command will install Ubuntu 21.04 Hirsute packages over 20.10 Groovy ones.\u00a0<\/p>\n<pre>\nsudo apt upgrade\n<\/pre>\n<p>Next, re-run the\u00a0<strong>dist-upgrade\u00a0<\/strong>command. This command will install all available Ubuntu 21.04 packages, including ones held back by the\u00a0<strong>upgrade\u00a0<\/strong>command.\u00a0<\/p>\n<pre>\nsudo apt dist-upgrade\n<\/pre>\n<p>Reboot your Linux PC. When you log back in, launch a terminal window. Then, execute the\u00a0<strong>apt autoremove\u00a0<\/strong>command to remove obsolete packages.<\/p>\n<pre>\nsudo apt autoremove <\/pre>\n<p>Once all obsolete packages have been removed, you\u2019ll be ready to use Ubuntu 21.04!
