Thankfully, it is possible to edit PPAs in Linux Mint with a GUI. Here\u2019s how to do it.<\/p>\n<p>First, press the\u00a0<strong>Win\u00a0<\/strong>key on the keyboard to open up the search window on Cinnamon, Mate, or whatever Linux Mint desktop you are using. From there, type in \u201cSoftware Sources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you can\u2019t find the app in the search results, press\u00a0<strong>Alt + F2\u00a0<\/strong>to open up the quick launch menu. After that, type in the <code>pkexec mintsources<\/code>\u00a0command and press the\u00a0<strong>Enter\u00a0<\/strong>key to open it.<\/p>\n<p>Once you are in the Software Sources app in Linux Mint, you\u2019ll see several different choices to choose from. There are \u201cOfficial Repositories,\u201d \u201cPPAs,\u201d \u201cAdditional Repositories,\u201d \u201cAuthentication Keys,\u201d and \u201cMaintenance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To edit (aka enable, disable or even add new software sources), find the \u201cPPAs\u201d section, and click on it. In this area, Linux Mint holds all software sources. Each PPA you add to your system gets its file in this folder.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To start the editing process, you will need to open up a terminal window on the Linux Mint desktop. Press <strong>Ctrl + Alt + T\u00a0<\/strong>on the keyboard or, search for \u201cterminal\u201d in the app menu, and open it that way.<\/p>\n<p>With the terminal window open and ready to use, use the\u00a0<strong>CD\u00a0<\/strong>command and move into the <code>\/etc\/apt\/sources.list.d\/<\/code> folder. Once you are in this folder, you can run the\u00a0<strong>ls\u00a0<\/strong>command to view the directory contents.<\/p>\n<p>ls<\/p>\n<p>If you have a lot of PPA files, there may be a lot to sort through. To make it easier, you can combine the\u00a0<strong>ls\u00a0<\/strong>command with the\u00a0<strong>grep\u00a0<\/strong>filter command. You can use\u00a0<strong>grep\u00a0<\/strong>to sort various keywords.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you\u2019re trying to find the Mozilla security ppa, you\u2019d search for the command below.<\/p>\n<pre>\nls | grep \"mozilla\"\n<\/pre>\n<h3>Remove a PPA<\/h3>\n<p>If you want to remove a PPA from Linux Mint entirely, you can do it right in the folder using the basic Bash terminal commands. To delete one PPA from the system, start using the <strong>rm\u00a0<\/strong>command, and specify the PPA filename.<\/p>\n<p>For example, to delete the Mozilla Security PPA from Linux Mint (the PPA that provides fast Firefox and Thunderbird updates), you can run the\u00a0<strong>rm\u00a0<\/strong>command alongside the \u201cubuntu-mozilla-security-ppa-focal.list\u201d file.\u00a0<\/p>\n<pre>\ncd \/etc\/apt\/sources.list.d\/\n<\/pre>\n<pre>\nsudo rm ubuntu-mozilla-security-ppa-focal.list\n<\/pre>\n<p>To remove any PPA list file from your Linux Mint PC, simply replace the \u201cmy_ppa_file_here.list with the PPA file you wish to remove from Linux Mint (that resides in <code>\/etc\/apt\/sources.list.d\/<\/code>.<\/p>\n<pre>\ncd \/etc\/apt\/sources.list.d\/\nsudo rm my_ppa_file_here.list\n<\/pre>\n<p>After your PPA is removed from Linux Mint, you will need to run the\u00a0<strong>update\u00a0<\/strong>command. This command will ensure that Linux Mint knows that the old PPA is no longer on the system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<pre>\nsudo apt update\n<\/pre>\n<p>Once updated, your PPA will be removed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Edit an existing PPA<\/h3>\n<p>It is possible to edit any existing PPA on Linux Mint using the terminal. To do it, you\u2019ll need first to enter the <code>\/etc\/apt\/sources.list.d\/<\/code> directory using the <strong>CD\u00a0<\/strong>command below.<\/p>\n<pre>\ncd \/etc\/apt\/sources.list.d\/\n<\/pre>\n<p>From here, you\u2019ll need to run the\u00a0<strong>ls\u00a0<\/strong>command to view the contents of the folder so that you can locate one for editing purposes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ls\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Or for better filtering.<\/p>\n<pre>\nls | grep \"name of ppa\"\n<\/pre>\n<p>When you\u2019ve figured out the name of your PPA, use the\u00a0<strong>nano\u00a0<\/strong>text editor to edit the PPA. For example, to edit the Mozilla Security PPA, you\u2019d enter:<\/p>\n<pre>\nsudo nano ubuntu-mozilla-security-ppa-focal.list\n<\/pre>\n<p>Once in editing mode, use the Nano text editor to tweak and change what you like. When done, press\u00a0<strong>Ctrl + O\u00a0<\/strong>to save it and press\u00a0<strong>Ctrl + X\u00a0<\/strong>to exit the editing.<\/p>\n<p>Use the following command example below to edit any PPA.<\/p>\n<pre>\ncd \/etc\/apt\/sources.list.d\/\nsudo nano my-ppa-file.list\n<\/pre>\n<h3>Add a new PPA<\/h3>\n<p>Adding a new PPA to Linux Mint over the terminal is much, much more straightforward than removing or editing them. If you\u2019d like to add a new PPA to Linux Mint, simply use the <strong>add-apt-repository\u00a0<\/strong>command below.<\/p>\n<pre>\nsudo add-apt-repository ppa:my-ppa\/ppa\n<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Related Articles Are you a Linux Mint user?
